“After the earthquake that occurred last night, false news spread that misled the citizens and sowed panic in them,” caretaker Minister of Information Ziad al-Makary said on Thursday.
“The media faces a societal and national responsibility in combating fabricated information,” Makary added.
In this respect, the minister called on social media outlets to verify and be careful in publishing the news, and on citizens to get the news from reliable sources.
Finally, the minister announced the official and reliable sources for news of the earthquakes: the National Operations Room for Disaster and Crisis Management, and the National Council for Scientific Research – the National Center for Geophysics.
