Resigned Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi Wednesday criticized Future Movement’s inflexible endorsement of Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Frangieh for the presidency, saying that it brought the situation from bad to worse.
The Future Movement’s parliamentary bloc Tuesday reiterated its commitment to supporting Frangieh as head of state, effectively dismissing any chances for Aoun’s presidential bid.
Rifi’s resignation from the Cabinet effectively marked his departure from Future.
The resigned minister also urged all political factions to stop endorsing both Aoun and Frangieh, and end “gratuitous” resignations plaguing governmental actions.
“What is needed today is a display of unity among political factions, and the only way this can be achieved is by collectively facing projects that aim to weaken the Lebanese state and its institutions,” Rifi said.
