Under the patronage and presence of Caretaker Minister of Information, Dr. Manal Abdel Samad Najd, the Lebanese Ministry of Information hosts a conference via Zoom on Friday, December 11, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm titled “The Role of Media in Protecting Human Rights and Boosting Transparency”.
The conference will host representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and a group of parliamentary, human rights and military figures, whether in the field of preserving media freedom or in the field of combating corruption and promoting a culture of transparency.
During the conference, Minister Abdel Samad will explain the role of the media in its capacity as a pivotal link between state officials and citizens, and the way it contributes to reinforcing freedom of opinion and expression and emboldens citizen participation in decision-making mechanisms through observation, proposals, and accountability — let alone the way it boosts governance and helps fight corruption.
The Minister will also explain the importance of having the Ministry of Information adopt the “Right to Information” law. She will also give a briefing on the process through which the Ministry of Information had proposed this bill back in 2017 to finally get it implemented in 2020.
Upon implementation, this law will lead to the spread of an institutional culture based on accountability and promotion of transparency, which both constitute a fundamental pillar of good governance.
The Ministry of Information has prepared an integrated media plan on the right to access information that will be launched during the aforementioned conference.
The conference will be broadcast live on the social media portals of the Ministry of Information and Tele Lebanon, thus all those interested can follow the conference on the following links:
