Caretaker Minister of Information, Dr. Manal Abdel Samad Najd, on Tuesday addressed two letters to each of Caretaker Minister of Justice, Marie-Claude Najem, and Chairman of the Administration and Justice House committee, MP George Adwan, in which she indicated that Lebanon has witnessed a regression at the level of freedom of expression, whereby most lodged complaints mainly focused on cases related to journalists’ criticizing of public figures.
Minister Abdel Samad stressed in her letters that “the Publications Court is the sole side entitled to try journalists for media acts.”
Abdel Samad urged the Minister of Justice to take the appropriate measures to prevent violation of media liberties, and to safeguard freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution and other laws.
The Minister also called on MP Adwan to “approve the media project law as soon as possible as per the final version amended by the committee emanating from the Ministry of Information, as it simulates global standards for media freedoms and respects human rights.”
