BEIRUT: The Acting U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Pernille Kardel Wednesday met with Lebanese Army representatives in Bekaa’s Ras Baalbeck and Arsal near the northern borders, in a follow-up visit after the Rome II conference in March.
“Today I saw first-hand how the Lebanese Army’s presence … has succeeded in extending state authority in the area and consolidating its security and stability,” a statement from Kardel’s office quoted her saying following the visit.
She praised the Army’s ongoing demining efforts and border protection “in a difficult environment,” and highlighted the importance of enhancing the socio-economic situation in border areas as the only means to ensure peace and security.
Kardel’s visit follows the Rome II conference, which brought together the international community mid-March to pledge support for Lebanon’s Army and security institutions.
