WhatsApp scam uses shocking new ploy to TRICK YOU, here’s how you can avoid it

WHATSAPP users should to be on the lookout for a terrifying new scam message doing the rounds on the hugely-popular chat app. Unlike previous hoax messages, this latest attempt uses an element of truth to convince you it’s the real deal. Here’s how to avoid falling for the Martinelli Video and WhatsApp Gold scam.

WhatsApp users should be aware of a new scam doing the rounds on the successful messaging platform.
Unlike previous scam messages that have circulated on the Facebook-owned chat app, this latest message actually contains an element of truth.
The WhatsApp hoax encourages users to forward on the message, like the chain-mail messages that used to plague email users in years gone-by.
The first half of the message is a hoax, warning users of a so-called “Martinelli Video” capable of hacking your smartphone when viewed on your device.
However, the second half of the chain-mail message addresses WhatsApp Gold – an existing scam that has tried to trick users since 2016.
The message in full, reads: “If you know anyone using WhatsApp you might pass on this.
“An IT colleague has advised that a video comes out tomorrow from WhatsApp called martinelli do not open it, it hacks your phone and nothing will fix it.
“Spread the word. If you receive a message to update the Whatsapp to Whatsapp Gold, do not click !!!!!
“Now said on the news this virus is difficult and severe. Pass it on to all.”
Since 2016, WhatsApp users have reported receiving an exclusive invitation to install a premium version of WhatsApp, dubbed WhatsApp Gold, that includes features not available in the standard version.
The upgrade supposedly offers new features, like the ability to send more than 100 pictures at once, make video calls, and delete messages.
Since the WhatsApp Gold hoax started to spread, WhatsApp has actually added two of the three rumoured features.
Another popular scam message that often spreads across WhatsApp is the rumour the Facebook-owned is planning to introduce a new 99p subscription fee.
WhatsApp is currently working on a way to stop this type of scam message that will flag-up when a text has been forwarded too many times.
The system is rumoured to warn users when a message or link has been forwarded more than 25 times from a single device.
The new “Forwarded Message” feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta version v2.18.67.
However, it’s unclear when the hoax-prevention system will roll-out in wide release.
